Gettysburg Address
Four score and seven years ago, our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal. Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure.

It is for us, the living, rather to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. 改革開放以來,我國的英語教育規(guī)模不斷擴大,教育教學(xué)取得了顯著成就。然而受應(yīng)試教育的影響,學(xué)校教育仍普遍存在重考試成績輕口語交際能力的現(xiàn)象。為適應(yīng)新課程改革提出的“從生活經(jīng)驗和認(rèn)知水平出發(fā),發(fā)展學(xué)生的綜合語言運用能力,使語言學(xué)習(xí)的過程成為學(xué)生形成積極的情感態(tài)度、主動思維和大膽實踐、提高跨文化意識和形成自主學(xué)習(xí)能力的過程”要求[1],我校多年來在英語教育教學(xué)過程中組織學(xué)生積極參與各種形式的課外實踐活動,提高學(xué)生的英語綜合運用能力。筆者主要談?wù)勛约核趯W(xué)校在創(chuàng)建外語特色學(xué)校的過程中,為提高中學(xué)生英語口語交際能力而開展的一系列課外活動,以及這些活動的活動所產(chǎn)生的影響。
一、提高中學(xué)生英語口語交際能力的課外活動研究的背景
筆者所在的學(xué)校自創(chuàng)辦以來就非常注重英語特色學(xué)校的建設(shè),一方面是為了適應(yīng)課程改革的需要,另一方面是為了不斷積累英語特色辦學(xué)的經(jīng)驗。在十多年的實踐過程中,我們不斷嘗試各種有效的活動方式體現(xiàn)辦學(xué)特色。尤其在課外實踐活動中,我校和社會各方面密切合作,開展多種多樣的活動,培養(yǎng)學(xué)生的聽、說、讀、寫能力。在眾多的課外實踐活動中,學(xué)生最感興趣的就是提高英語口語交際能力的活動。自2011年7月我校開始籌備到進入研究江蘇省教育科學(xué)“十二五”規(guī)劃課題的“外語特色學(xué)校創(chuàng)建中的英語教學(xué)輔助活動研究”以來,我們對能提高中學(xué)生口語交際能力的幾個行之有效的課外活動進行了長期的跟蹤研究。
二、提高中學(xué)生英語口語交際能力的主要課外活動的選擇
根據(jù)近年來,學(xué)校的課堂教育中仍然存在只注重學(xué)生英語知識的輸入而忽視學(xué)生英語能力輸出的傳統(tǒng)頑癥,我們在課外活動的選擇上更注重以提高學(xué)生英語口語交際能力為主的活動,同時顧及時間和場地的利用,學(xué)校、家庭及社會有關(guān)機構(gòu)的合作等。所以我們選取的活動形式時主要從三個方面考慮:一是便于學(xué)校和家庭,以及社會合作機構(gòu)的操作,二是既聯(lián)系學(xué)生生活又促進學(xué)習(xí),三是成為學(xué)生人生成長中的寶貴經(jīng)歷。我們選定兩種主要的形式作為研究對象:一是英語演講,二是涉外交流。
英語演講最能體現(xiàn)學(xué)生的英語水平和口語交際能力,因此英語演講是提高學(xué)生口語水平的新途徑[2]。進入21世紀(jì),隨著國際間交往的日益頻繁,高水準(zhǔn)的口頭表達能力和演講能力成為人們在生存和競爭中制勝的“法寶”和“殺手锏”,較高水平的口頭表達和交流能力是現(xiàn)代社會對人才的一項基本且重要的要求[3]。所以我們通過組織學(xué)生積極主動參與校內(nèi)外各種英語演講比賽,促進學(xué)生主動加強聽力能力和口頭表達能力的訓(xùn)練,鼓勵學(xué)生大膽擺脫“啞巴”英語,努力學(xué)習(xí)“有聲”英語,提高英語口語交際能力。
涉外交流是我們在特色辦學(xué)過程中不斷發(fā)展起來的一種有效的、影響更廣的課外活動形式。涉外就是和外國人有交流,學(xué)英語的最終目的就是用英語,在我國長期的英語教學(xué)過程中,中國學(xué)生幾乎沒有和外國人交流的經(jīng)驗。隨著經(jīng)濟全球化步伐的進一步加快,國際的跨文化交際日益頻繁,單純學(xué)習(xí)語言知識而不了解中西方文化的差異,無法達到有效交際的目的[4]。我們通過涉外交流活動,把外國專家、學(xué)者、學(xué)生、社團請進來,派遣我校老師、學(xué)生走進外國大學(xué)、中學(xué)、家庭體驗外國文化,增強學(xué)生的跨文化意識,提高學(xué)生的口語交際能力。
三、提高中學(xué)生英語口語交際能力的課外活動的具體實踐
經(jīng)過多年的實踐,我們已經(jīng)固定下來并一直在實行的演講活動有:校內(nèi)演講、校外演講。涉外交流合作形式有:和英美中學(xué)結(jié)締友好合作學(xué)校、訪問英美文化夏令營、邀請英美學(xué)者來校講學(xué)、邀請外國留學(xué)生舉行英語座談。
(一)英語演講比賽活動具體實踐。
1.舉辦英語演講指導(dǎo)講座。首先,通過學(xué)校英語俱樂部,組織主動積極參與英語演講活動的學(xué)生在學(xué)校禮堂收看英語演講視頻,如《21世紀(jì)全國中學(xué)生英語演講視頻》、《CCTV希望之星英語風(fēng)采大賽》等,讓學(xué)生在觀看全國中學(xué)生演講比賽視頻的過程中產(chǎn)生參與英語演講的熱情。然后,學(xué)校教務(wù)處安排老師做專題講座,從演講稿的選題立意、論據(jù)收集、謀篇布局、措辭運用、語言修改、演講道具到英語演講中的語音語調(diào)、音高、語速、停頓、重音、聲音的抑揚頓挫及節(jié)奏感的把握,再到面部表情、眼神、手勢等技巧的運用及情感控制等方面進行詳細(xì)的指導(dǎo)。
2.舉辦校內(nèi)演講比賽。每學(xué)期在學(xué)校內(nèi)舉行一次主題演講比賽。學(xué)校教務(wù)處英語教科室結(jié)合學(xué)生的實際選定主題,如my home,school life,my problems等,給學(xué)生一周的時間,由英語老師指導(dǎo)修改演講,在班級進行預(yù)備演講和篩選,最終確定參與學(xué)校比賽的學(xué)生名單,一個班級一個名額。在全校演講比賽的日子,全體師生共同參與,共同欣賞學(xué)生的精彩演講。學(xué)校根據(jù)比賽成績表彰獎勵演講優(yōu)秀的學(xué)生。
3.組織校外演講比賽。我校近年來與中國日報社“21世紀(jì)杯”全國中小學(xué)生演講比賽江蘇組委會合作,組織學(xué)生參加“21世紀(jì)杯”全國中小學(xué)生演講比賽。學(xué)校在每年10月份接到比賽組委會演講主題通知后,布置各英語老師在班上進行宣傳,鼓勵同學(xué)積極報名,自愿參與,并對本班同學(xué)的演講稿認(rèn)真篩選,確定本班參賽人員名單。教科室再統(tǒng)計全校參賽人數(shù)并進行核對,將參賽人的名單、聯(lián)系方式、指導(dǎo)老師等資料統(tǒng)一打包上交大賽組委會。教師組織這些學(xué)生每周集中培訓(xùn)一次,不斷提高演講口語表達能力。每年我校有數(shù)十名學(xué)生進入復(fù)賽和數(shù)名同學(xué)進入江蘇省決賽。
(二)涉外交流活動的具體實踐。
根據(jù)交往的形式,我們將涉外交流活動分為單向型和雙向型。單向型主要是由我校組織學(xué)生前往英美國家的文化單位學(xué)習(xí),了解西方國家的文化。或接受英美國家友好學(xué)校或其他團體來我校訪問,傳遞我們的文化。雙向型主要是我校和英美友好學(xué)校建立互助關(guān)系,互派學(xué)生交流學(xué)習(xí)。
1.單向型涉外交流的具體實踐。
主要形式是夏令營這是提高學(xué)生口語交際能力的主要涉外交流活動之一。每年暑假學(xué)校組織學(xué)生到英國和美國進行學(xué)習(xí)交流活動。學(xué)生居住在英國或美國家庭中,和家庭主人共同生活兩周時間,在這兩周的時間里,學(xué)生還走入社會,和當(dāng)?shù)鼐用窠涣?,走訪當(dāng)?shù)貙W(xué)校和文化單位,學(xué)習(xí)英美文化。通過夏令營的實踐活動,學(xué)生的口語交際能力大大提高。
另外,邀請在國內(nèi)的外籍學(xué)生和老師到本校和學(xué)生舉行交流聚會。如2013年1月10日下午,美國伊利諾伊大學(xué)厄本納-香檳分校師生一行18人來我校訪問交流。在每學(xué)期兩次的聚會中,學(xué)生大膽開口,嘗試用英語表達自己的想法,學(xué)會了和外國友人交流。
2.雙向型涉外交流的具體實踐。
雙向型的涉外交流活動主要是和聯(lián)誼學(xué)校合作,互派交換學(xué)生。這是一種長期而有效的提高學(xué)生口語交際能力的方式。2012年10月18日,我校與美國North Cross學(xué)校締結(jié)成友好學(xué)校。雙方都安排學(xué)生到對方學(xué)校學(xué)習(xí),為不斷提高學(xué)生的口語交流能力創(chuàng)造良好的外部條件。返回學(xué)校后的外派學(xué)生又促進本校同學(xué)的英語口語交流能力。當(dāng)然這樣的活動不僅需要學(xué)校專項研究經(jīng)費的支持,還需要本地經(jīng)濟實體的大力支持。
四、提高中學(xué)生英語口語交際能力的課外活動的積極影響
有效組織英語演講和涉外交流活動,有助于充分發(fā)揮每個學(xué)生的潛能,培養(yǎng)學(xué)生的創(chuàng)新精神和實踐能力,促進學(xué)生個性的健康發(fā)展,完善學(xué)生的綜合素質(zhì),提高學(xué)生實際語言運用能力。所以這兩種形式的課外活動主要有以下積極影響:
(一)對提高學(xué)生口語交際能力起到了明顯的促進作用。在演講比賽活動中,學(xué)生為了展示自己的口語表達能力,加強訓(xùn)練,不斷模仿和強化地道的英語口語表達習(xí)慣。通過視頻觀看,班級模擬練習(xí),以及參賽者的集中訓(xùn)練,提高了學(xué)生的語境適應(yīng)能力,調(diào)動了學(xué)生練習(xí)口語的積極性,同時增強了開口用英語表達的自信心。在跨文化交流活動中,學(xué)生表現(xiàn)得更為好奇和積極。為了能將自己所學(xué)的在英語環(huán)境中表達出來,和地道的英美人士進行實地交流,學(xué)生更加注意培養(yǎng)自己的語言表達能力。在現(xiàn)實交流中學(xué)生會碰到語言交流中的差異,在發(fā)現(xiàn)差異和適應(yīng)差異的過程中學(xué)生不斷地修正自己的表達,從而提高自身的口語交際能力。通過參加這些活動,學(xué)生更加認(rèn)識到提高英語口語交際能力的重要性。
(二)通過舉辦這些活動,促進了學(xué)生自身全面發(fā)展,符合課程標(biāo)準(zhǔn)的要求。英語演講和涉外交流活動為學(xué)生提供展示自我、挑戰(zhàn)自我的平臺,創(chuàng)造互相交流和學(xué)習(xí)的機會。學(xué)生在英語演講活動和涉外交流活動準(zhǔn)備階段,通過搜集整理有關(guān)資料,擴大知識面,培養(yǎng)自主學(xué)習(xí)能力;在英語演講和涉外交流活動進行中,通過大膽開口、積極思維,提高心理素質(zhì),發(fā)展批判性思維習(xí)慣的形成,以及批判性思維能力[5],為學(xué)生終身發(fā)展積累一定的寶貴經(jīng)驗。
(三)通過組織這些活動,促進了校園文化的建設(shè)。英語演講和涉外交流活動是外語特色學(xué)校創(chuàng)辦過程中所實施的課外教學(xué)輔助活動的一部分,學(xué)生積極參與這些活動,為學(xué)校營造濃郁的英語文化氛圍,展示蓬勃向上的精神風(fēng)貌,凸顯外語特色學(xué)校的特色,促進我校相關(guān)課題研究的順利進行。同時在組織這些活動中,英語教師隊伍整體專業(yè)素質(zhì)得到了提高,為學(xué)校的可持續(xù)發(fā)展創(chuàng)造了良好的外部環(huán)境。
總之,在英語特色學(xué)校創(chuàng)辦過程中,通過組織演講比賽和涉外交流等課外活動,在激發(fā)學(xué)生的學(xué)習(xí)興趣和提高學(xué)生的口語交際能力方面的確起到了積極的促進作用。教師和學(xué)生在這些活動中所都出的努力也有了很大收獲,但是在今后的學(xué)校發(fā)展過程中,為了更好地適應(yīng)課程改革的需要,還要不斷優(yōu)化此類活動的開展,讓更多的學(xué)生參與其中,為學(xué)生提供更多實踐舞臺,為以后跨文化交流打下基礎(chǔ);為教師提供專業(yè)提升機會,為教師拓寬教學(xué)視野;為學(xué)校的可持續(xù)發(fā)展開辟更加寬廣的道路,促進中西方學(xué)校相互間的交流與溝通。
